Chisel tools are used for cutting or carving hard materials such as metal, stone or wood. A chisel tool has a shaped cutting edge of a blade on its end, with a handle that is characteristically made of wood or metal.

What is Chisel? Grizzl10

In order to cut into a material – wood or metal – a chisel tool is forced into the material. The driving force may be done manually, or may be applied using a hammer or mallet.  In industrial applications, a trip hammer or falling weight, or a hydraulic ram can be used to force the chisel into the material to be cut.

Chisel tools are used in a wide range of applications. Many types of chisels have been developed, and each is suited to its intended use. Chisels are made differently according to their different types and uses. The length or width of the blade; the hardness and shape of the blade, and the type of handles and materials used, are some of the various factors that can make one type of a chisel different from the other.

Chiselling use involves forcing the blade into some material to cut it. The driving force may be applied by pushing by hand, or by using a mallet or hammer. In industrial use, a hydraulic ram or falling weight ('trip hammer') may be used to drive a chisel into the material.

Cold chisel is a tool made of tempered steel used for cutting 'cold' metals, meaning that they are not used in conjunction with heating torches, forges, etc. Cold chisels are used to remove waste metal when a very smooth finish is not required or when the work cannot be done easily with other tools, such as a hacksaw, file, bench shears or power tools.

hot chisel is used to cut metal that has been heated in a forge to soften the metal. One type of hot chisel is the hotcut hardy, which is used in an anvil hardy hole with the cutting edge facing up. The hot work piece to be cut is placed over the chisel and struck with a hammer. The hammer drives the work piece into the chisel, which allows it to be snapped off with a pair of tongs. This tool is also often used in combination with a "top fuller" type of hotcut, when the piece being cut is particularly large.

A chisel is a long-bladed hand tool with a beveled cutting edge and a plain handle that is struck with a hammer or mallet, used to cut or shape wood, stone, metal, or other hard materials.

Artifacts made by stone and bones are created by a man which may itself be used as a special engraving tool. Burins are specialized chisel-like tools mainly adapted for the working of antler and bone. Its characteristic feature is a short transverse cutting edge formed by striking the narrow edge of a flake or burin form to detach a spall.

Cold Chisel
A cold chisel is a metal working chisel with a solid, hardened steel cylindrical shaft about 6 inches long. It is is designed to cut steel and other metals that have either not been heated or have previously cooled down. The chisel is typically used in conjunction with a steel hammer, such as a ball-peen hammer, or 3-pound sledge.

As ancient, archaeological discoveries indicate, the crude, stone-fashioned forerunners of today's chisels, may have been the first of its kind used by primitive man. The Egyptians used copper and later bronze chisels to work both wood and soft stone. Chisels today are made of steel, in various sizes and degrees of hardness, depending on use.

Flint ancestors of the present-day chisel existed as far back as 8000 BC. Versions are believed to have been used for marble carving in 6th century BC Greece, inscriptions on an ancient tomb of 7th century BC Egypt

just wanna add brief history of wood chisels Very Happy
Chisels were among the earliest tools. They have been employed (in their most basic form) since Stone Age man learned to break stones into a roughly flat shape with a sharp edge.Stones such as flint were used by Neolithic man and there are many archaeological discoveries that prove this. Flint was favoured as it is dense, hard and easily flaked, and when flaked produces razor sharp edges. As people learned to smelt ore (extract metal from rock by heating it), flint tools were succeeded by those made from copper and, later, bronze (an alloy of copper and tin). Bronze tools were much easier to work with and could be reshaped and resharpened with greater precision.Ancient Egyptian carpenters and masons were known to use bronze chisels in the construction of the pyramids. With the invention of hotter furnaces and the ability to smelt iron ore, the softer bronze chisels were, in turn, replaced by ones made from iron.As technology advanced in the modern age, and people learned how to mix carbon with iron to create steel, the iron chisel was succeeded by harder, steel versions.

What are firmer chisels used for?

As the name suggests, firmer chisels are typically manufactured with a thicker, sturdier blade. This is because they are frequently used in conjunction with a mallet for heavy-duty cutting and chopping tasks. The cutting edge is usually ground to an angle of between 25 and 35 degrees, giving the cutting edge greater strength when heavy mallet blows are needed.
