Yes of course. Though electricians focuses mainly in electrical works, they also encounters some woodworks and metalworks which the file can most like be useful.

Files are defined by a number of different attributes. The most important of these attributes are the ones that suit it to a specific task.

Its cross section, profile and the pattern of its teeth are vital in terms of determining whether it will be better at shaping, finishing or deburring an object, or sharpening a blade.

This will be the first thing that will give you a clue about what a file should be used for, although it's important to bear in mind that files may have multiple uses.

For example, a chainsaw file, which was designed to sharpen chainsaw blades, is useful in the creation of f-holes in violin making.

Just bear in mind that, in other cases, files are named according to their shape.

Two Bevels Are Better Than One

A new chisel has just one bevel, usually 25 degrees. But the tool should be sharpened at 30 degrees, which creates a new bevel. Why have two bevels? It’s all about saving you time and energy.

The 25-degree bevel is called the ‘grinding bevel’; you’ll use a bench grinder to renew it. The 30-degree bevel is called the ‘honing bevel’; you’ll use a honing stone or sandpaper to create it.

Grinding goes fast, but honing can be slow. If your chisel had only one bevel-the 30-degree one-you’d have to hone its entire surface to get a sharp edge. Creating a second bevel at a lower angle-the grinding bevel-reduces the amount of steel you must hone. When the 30-degree bevel extends three-quarters of the way up the chisel, it’s time to go to the grinder and create a new 25-degree bevel.

Maybe it depends on how you store and properly sharpen the edges for the tool to lasts.

Files have also been developed with abrasive surfaces, allowing the removal of material that would dull or resist metal, such as ceramic.

Files are very useful in terms of sharpening and removing dullness in most tools.

Wood chisels are made in various shapes and sizes and for many uses. Use the correct chisel for the job.

-Wear safety glasses, or goggles, or a face shield (with safety glasses or goggles).
-Use the right size of chisel for the job.
-Choose smooth, rectangular handles that have no sharp edges and are attached firmly to the chisel.
-wood chisel
-Make sure that the cutting edge is sharp. Dull chisels can be difficult to control and require more effort to do the job.
-Check the stock (wood) thoroughly for knots, staples, nails, screws or other foreign objects before chiseling.
-Clamp stock so it cannot move.
-Adjust your stance so that you do not lose your balance if the tool slips.
-Chip or cut with the blade pointing away from yourself.
-Keep your hands and body behind the cutting edge.
-Use a wooden or plastic mallet with a large striking face on all chisels. Only heavy-duty or framing chisels are made of a solid or molded handle ---that can be struck with a steel hammer.
-Make finishing or paring cuts with hand pressure alone.
-When keeping the chisels on the work bench, always place them with the bevel side up.
-Place chisels safely within the plastic protective caps to cover cutting edges when not in use.
-Replace any chisel that is bent or shows dents, cracks, chips, or excessive wear.
-Store chisels in a "storage roll," a cloth or plastic bag with slots for each chisel, and keep them in a drawer or tray.
-Replace broken or splintered handles.
-Sharpen cutting edges as often as necessary.-
-Wear eye protection if there is a risk of eye injury from particles released from the workpiece or when sharpening.

it is used to remove fine amounts of material from a workpiece. for example after cutting a pvc pipe you need to us a file to remove the rough edges of the pipe.

YES, because when an electrician cuts the pipe he/she needs to file the edge of the pipe to avoid damaging the material tha tinserts in the pipe like wires

DONT'S
Do not use a wood chisel as a pry or a wedge.
Do not use a wood chisel on metal.
Do not hold the work with one hand while chiseling with the other hand.
Do not use an all-steel chisel with a mushroomed face or a chipped edge. Redress with a file or whetstone.
Do not use a grinder to redress heat-treated tools. Use a whetstone.
Do not use a dull chisel.

DO'S
Wear safety glasses, or goggles, or a face shield (with safety glasses or goggles).
Use the right size of chisel for the job.
Choose smooth, rectangular handles that have no sharp edges and are attached firmly to the chisel.

Files and rasps are both made for wood shaping. However, using a file for shaping wood is unlike shaping wood using a rasp. Files are more effectively used in metals, whereas rasps are more effective in wood. This is because rasps are coarser than files, thus making it easy for rasps to carve out wood/lumber. But still, you can use a file for wood since it is what is was made for originally, rasps are just specially made hand tools for wood.

Adrian wrote:Can chisels be used in concrete?

Step 1
Grasp the cold chisel loosely in your fist placing the tip of the chisel against the concrete you intend to break. Lean the chisel so that only one point of the tip is resting on the concrete.

Step 2
Grasp the bottom end of the handle of a small sledge hammer tightly. Tap the head of the chisel with a half-swing and immediately strike it again with a full swing. Continue digging a hole in the concrete with only one point of the cold chisel using a half-strike/full-strike double tap of your sledge.

Step 3
Lean the chisel perpendicular to the angle of the first angle so that the full width of the blade rests against the concrete and the bevel is parallel to the surface of the concrete.

Step 4
Strike the head of the chisel with your hammer with the same half strike/full strike maneuver to remove larger chunks of concrete.

Step 5
Reposition the chisel with the width of the tip resting flat and the bevel parallel to the surface of the concrete and remove another small chunk with the double tap maneuver. Continue moving the cold chisel and removing small chunks until the job is complete.
